How to Prep Your Home for Twilight Photos

Twilight photos are some of the most powerful images in a listing. They add drama, warmth, and a high-end feel—but only if the home is prepared correctly.

Here’s how to get your home ready so twilight shots look intentional and inviting, not chaotic.

1. Turn On Every Interior and Exterior Light

Twilight photography is all about glow.

  • interior lights

  • porch lights

  • soffit lighting

  • landscape lights

  • string lights

If it lights up, turn it on.

2. Replace Burned-Out Bulbs Beforehand

One dead bulb can ruin an otherwise perfect twilight shot.

Check:

  • porch fixtures

  • garage fixtures

  • coach lights

  • kitchen pendants

  • chandeliers

Aim for matching color temperatures (all warm or all neutral, not a mix of blue and yellow).

3. Clear the Driveway and Street in Front

Twilight shots look best when:

  • the driveway is empty

  • trash cans are removed

  • no vehicles block the view

4. Tidy Patios and Outdoor Living Areas

Since twilight emphasizes outdoor spaces:

  • arrange patio furniture neatly

  • fold and place blankets or cushions

  • put away hoses and yard tools

  • remove random decor that doesn’t photograph well

5. Curtains and Blinds: Mostly Open

You want light spilling out, not rooms looking closed off.

  • open blinds partially

  • leave curtains drawn back where possible

  • avoid showing dark “black boxes” in key windows

6. Turn Off Ceiling Fans

Lights on, fans off.
Moving fan blades create blur in long exposures.

7. Coordinate With Your Photographer on Timing

Twilight is a small window, usually 20–30 minutes. I time the session based on:

  • the property orientation

  • weather

  • sunset time

  • cloud cover

Being ready on time matters.
