What Sellers Forget Before Photo Day (But Buyers Notice Immediately)
Most sellers try hard to get ready for photos. But even with the best intentions, there are a few things that almost everyone forgets—and buyers notice them immediately.
Here’s a quick run-through of the most common “oops” moments and how to fix them fast.
1. Trash Cans in Front and Back
Curb appeal is ruined instantly by:
big city bins in the driveway
kitchen or bath trash visible in the frame
Fix:
Move all visible trash cans to the garage or side yard.
2. Fridge Covered in Magnets and Papers
Refrigerators are one of the biggest visual distractions.
Fix:
Clear the fridge entirely.
Leave it clean and neutral.

3. Personal Items in Bathrooms
Buyers do not want to see:
toothbrushes
razors
medications
used towels
Fix:
Place everything in a bin under the sink.
Use clean, neutral towels only.
4. Pet Items Everywhere
Pet bowls, beds, crates, toys, scratching posts—these all grab attention in photos.
Fix:
Put pet items in one room that won’t be photographed heavily, or temporarily into the car or garage.
5. Open Toilet Lids
A small detail that completely changes the feel of the shot.
Fix:
Make a last-minute lap through the house and close all lids.
6. Random Cords and Chargers
Dangling cords underneath TVs and nightstands pull focus away from the room itself.
Fix:
Unplug and hide cords temporarily.
7. Cars in the Driveway
Even nice vehicles distract from the home itself.
Fix:
Park cars down the street or around the corner during the exterior portion of the shoot.
8. Half-Opened Blinds and Curtains
Uneven window coverings make rooms feel chaotic.
Fix:
Open all blinds to one consistent height.
Open curtains fully where possible.
You Don’t Have to Be Perfect—Just Intentional
You don’t need a magazine-clean house. You just need to remove the handful of things that pull attention away from your home.
If in doubt?
Less is better.
Hosts preparing an Airbnb/VRBO photo shoot should follow the same prep rules.
